    Working from home can put mental health at risk, causing feelings of isolation and disconnection: Prakriti Poddar

    Prakriti Poddar, expert in mental health and Director of Poddar Wellness suggests some ways to keep strong mentally during the Covid-19 lockdown.

    She told ET Panache, "A lot of bandwidth of mental space that one has is being used up now on other things. For many, it’s being used up processing what’s going on around."

    Poddar suggests trying to accept that and develop a new normal for this situation. "Lower expectations of productivity. We need to acknowledge that everybody will be going through something different right now and will have different levels of stress. Don’t expect people to be their best selves. Have a lot of compassion," she said.

    With Covid-19 fear around, many are stressed. This is how, Poddar suggests people deal with it.

    "Humans are social animals. We’re hardwired for connection. Isolation and loneliness can exacerbate anxiety and depression. It can even impact our physical health. That’s why it’s important to stay connected as best we can and reach out for support when we need it, even as we cut back on in-person socialising," she said.

    Work stress with work from home and daily chores are taking a toll on many. Finding a balance is key.

    "For some people, working from home can put their mental health at risk, causing feelings of isolation and disconnection. When you don’t have an office to show up to, you miss out on opportunities for regular social interaction and connection with co-workers," Poddar explained.

    She encourages an honest survey of work habits and tendencies. "There’s no perfect formula for figuring out whether or not working from home works for you. How you’ll respond to a remote work environment is completely dependent on your individual needs and triggers. If you feel unhappy in your current work situation — whether it’s at home or in an office and are unsure what to do, consider talking to a mental health counsellor to help you weigh your options," Poddar ended.
